Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is about Libre Software - software that embodies user's rights over author's rights. Since all software authors are also software users, the rights of users do not take away from the rights of authors. Because the number of users far exceeds the number of authors, it is better to preserve the rights of the larger group - especially so when it can actually benefit the minority group. By preserving user's rights to see and modify the software, original authors gain valuable collaborators among other symbiotic relationships.
